According to Unicef, Nigerian children are vulnerable to a wide range of abuses and harmful traditional practices. The national legal framework for child protection is the Child Rights Act 2003, but to date, only 23 of 36 states have adopted the Act.
Implementation is patchy with many local authority bodies unaware of their duties under the law. A national survey in 2014 found that 6 out of 10 children reported having suffered one or more forms of violence before reaching 18 years of age, with 70 per cent of those experiencing multiple incidents of violence. The country has the largest number of child brides in Africa: 23 million girls and women were married as children.
We empower the men who work on the streets to provide livelihood support and options, including start-up funding for small own-account businesses.
This group is a community of hope and resilience. By offering education, mentorship, and financial support, the Youth Development Group helps these young men transition from a life of uncertainty to one filled with promise and potential. Through tailored programs, they learn valuable skills, gain access to resources, and receive the encouragement needed to pursue their dreams.
The impact of the Youth Development Group is profound. It not only changes the lives of the individuals it serves but also strengthens the fabric of the entire community. By fostering entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency, the group helps to break the cycle of poverty and create a ripple effect of positive change.
In the words of one participant, "The Youth Development Group gave me a second chance. They believed in me when no one else did, and now I have my own business and a future I can be proud of."
With Your Support, together, we can continue to support and uplift these young men, ensuring that they have the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a better Jamaica.
Dr. Denise Buchanan is the Founder and CEO of FAITH HAS FEET, an initiative dedicated to empowering inter-faith and youth leaders to create safe and healthy communities for children by transforming their faith into positive, impactful actions. As a Psycho-neurologist, Author, Harvard Sustainable Business Strategist, Entrepreneur and Certified Human Rights Consultant, Dr. Buchanan is a Founding Member of ECA: Ending Clergy Abuse, A Global Justice Project.
Over the past seven years, Denise has been instrumental in expanding the organization across five continents, uniting members from over 25 countries. ECA is a powerful coalition of thousands of human rights activists and survivors who hold the Roman Catholic Church accountable, demanding protection for children and justice for victims of clergy sexual abuse.
As a Jamaican survivor of clergy sexual abuse herself, Dr. Buchanan is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and she thrives in the realm of what's possible. Dr. Buchanan recognized a profound disconnect between the teachings and laws of faith-based institutions, including the Catholic Church, and their actual implementation to safeguard children. This realization compelled her to create FAITH HAS FEET, an initiative dedicated to mobilizing inter-faith youth, congregants and community leaders. Through education, collaboration and the implementation of proven strategies, FAITH HAS FEET strives to protect children from violence and equip them with essential life skills and business acumen, to cultivate a prosperous future.
Denise Buchanan grew up on the island of Jamaica where palm trees were prevalent and so too were hurricanes. Denise has always been fascinated by nature and its rich guiding principles which interweave with our life's journey and she unravels in poetic verse, the story of Pamela the Palm Tree, who confronts a storm and what it takes for her to emerge stronger in the end.
